Unlocking the Entrepreneurial Spirit: Lessons from a 4-Year-Old Trick-or-Treater

It was Oct 31st, 1995.

I was 4 years old.

Trick or treating as a kid probably dressed as one of the cutest kids on the block. 

I gathered as much halloween candy as I possibly could… 

And most would take Nov 1st as an opportunity to indulge in that candy…

Not me…

I chose to recognize that Nov 1st was an opportunity to try and sell that same halloween candy back to the neighbours that bought it. 

See as naive as I was at 4 years old. That childlike ideology taught me that sales and marketing is absolutely a transferrence of value. 

Even at 4 years old I wasn’t afraid to make an offer because I had something that my neighbours no longer had.

Did I sell the halloween candy? Dang right I did. The neighbours were extremely amused and accepted my offer. 

Many of us have value that we can provide to the marketplace, but our fear holds us back from making the ask and making the offer.

We all have that voice in our head that says,

“What if they laugh at me”

“What if they tell me to eff off”

“What if I am ridiculed” 

“What if they say no”

These are things that come up when we try to make offers to the marketplace. 

They hold us back from growing our businesses. 

We care far too much what people might think about us, we forget about the value we can bring if they say yes.

When we shift mindset towards service, we are inclined to make more offers.

We are inclined to make digital door knock and physical door knock offers.

If we believe that we can help someone, we should make an offer to the marketplace. 

We should try and embrace our 4 year old ideologies of making the ask.
