How Selling Halloween Candy Got Me Into Entrepreneurship

I had a really interesting conversation the other day with my parents about my journey over the last 30 years.  

They reminded of a great story that really made me chuckle a bit. 

So I thought I’d pop in here and share it with you real quick. 

As a kid I would go out trick or treating (about the age of 4 or 5)… 

And like many kids, I would collect a ton of candy in my local neighbourhood.

Well… 

A few days would pass and I decided that I’d rather have money than free candy.

So what did I do?

I went door-to-door in an attempt to sell this Halloween candy I had been given a few days before 🍭

And surprisingly… I made a few sales 😉

I guess there were some mothers and fathers out there that felt sorry for me and gave me a buck or two for some M&M packets… 

Now the truth be told… 

I never made a career out of selling halloween candy door-to-door, but it definitely was an entry point for me to jump start my business career and it was in my DNA. 

Why am I telling you this? 

Well because not every business idea works the first time… 

Sometimes it takes multiple iterations and tries before you find the thing that sticks. 

And if you look at biographies of people who have “made it” you will see that they have had multiple iterations of businesses that didn’t work before they got to the one that did work. And this is why not every marketing strategy or plan works the first time…  

That said, marketing ALWAYS works.It just doesn’t always work the first time. 

Why is this the case?

Well because buying cycles are often long and soemtimes people don’t even realize they have the problem that you are looking to solve. 

This is why we always recommend refining your messaging, your offer, your creative and your strategy if the thing you are doing simply isn’t working.  

Try not to get frustrated if your marketing isn’t working.  

Rather, try something new.

Change somethings up.  

Test some new copy.

Test some new creative.Test a new angle.

Marketing always works. It just doesn’t always work the first time.
